Illustrated portrait of Martin Maltby

Martin Maltby

Has lived in Valencia's Ruzafa neighborhood since 2017.

Martin Maltby practiced architecture in Chicago for over 20 years, designing schools and public libraries, before a sabbatical in Valencia in 2016 turned into a permanent change of address. He moved for good in 2017 on a non-lucrative visa, rented an apartment in the lively Ruzafa neighborhood, and never seriously considered going back. Martin has worked through nearly every step of the Spanish system: consulate appointments, the TIE card, empadronamiento at the town hall, private health insurance, and eventually long-term residency.

He later bought an apartment in a 1920s building and survived the renovation permits that came with it, which gives him a professional's eye for old construction and a realist's view of Spanish timelines. He speaks solid Castilian Spanish and is working, slowly, on Valencian. Martin's guides are detailed without being dry.

He covers the paperwork and tax questions that worry Americans most, but he also writes about the things that made him stay: long lunches, the Turia gardens, Mediterranean light, and a city built for walking. He's honest about the downsides too, from summer heat to rising rents. Martin's goal is to help you build a real life in Spain, not just survive the move.

Long-term resident of Spain.

How our guides are written

Our guides are written by Martin Maltby, our Spain Country Guide, who lives in Spain and writes from experience on the ground. The Landed team edits each guide. Where a guide relies on an official source, we link it at the end. Rules and costs change, so every page shows when it was published and last updated.

How we make money

Our guides and move plans are free. The professionals we introduce you to pay us for the introduction, and you decide whether to hire them. How it works explains this in full.
